The Barossa Valley in South Australia’s famous wine growing region was the only Australian destination listed in the “best places to go in 2008” in the New York Times. It was also listed among the ten best wine destinations in the world alongside places like Bordeax and Tuscany. The Barossa valley is Australia’s oldest wine growing region with links going back to the early European migrants who first colonised the area. This region is the home of the famous Penfolds Grange Hermitage which is recognised as the country’s best red wine and has been voted the world best red in past years. Daily bus services from Adelaide can take you to the Barossa. Organised tours have detailed itineraries in the region or you can hire a car for a few days or a week and explore the Barossa Valley at your own pace. It is only 70 or 80 kilometres from Adelaide through some truly beautiful countryside. There are dozens and dozens of cellar doors to try and some of the household names in the Australian wine industry have their homes here. Names like Wollf Blass, Peter Lehmann, Penfolds, Hardys, Henschke, Seppelts and Jacobs Creek are among the many excellent producers from the region.
